A southerly quarter airflow lies over the North Island today bringing wet weather in the east, drier conditions out west. The South Island is mainly settled thanks to high pressure.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, cloud more frequent from afternoon with showers or perhaps some rain for Coromandel and western Bay Of Plenty. Breezy southerly winds.
Highs: 16 – 20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers or occasional spits, clearing in the evening. Breezy south to southeasterly winds, strong about coastal parts.
Highs: 10 – 16

Eastern North Island

Rain, becoming heavy for Gisborne in the afternoon then perhaps Hawkes Bay in the evening pushing down from the north, perhaps a chance of thunder with heavy rain. Fresh to strong southerlies.
Highs: 13 – 17

Wellington

Rain eases to showers in the afternoon with sunny spells breaking through, showers clear by evening. Strong southerlies ease at night.
Highs: 12 – 13

Marlborough & Nelson

Early showers clear Marlborough then sunny areas increase, fresh southerlies. Nelson is sunny with southerlies tending to the north in the afternoon.
High: 16 – 19

Canterbury

Any morning cloud breaks away, morning showers for Kaikoura clear. Sunny otherwise with southerlies tending east to northeast in the afternoon.
High: 13 – 21

West Coast

Sunny, high cloud for South Westland later in the day. Light winds.
Highs: 17 – 21

Southland & Otago
Sunny after a cold start, some high cloud later in the day. Light winds, east to northeasterly winds freshen for coastal Otago with cooler temperatures than elsewhere.
Highs: 14 – 23
