Saturday’s national forecast – Heavy rain continues in the north

A front feeding into a low pressure system lying just to the northwest brings in heavy rain to northeastern parts of the North Island today. The South Island is more settled with high pressure, some rain pushing down from the north later on for the top of the South Island though.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain or showers, heavy falls about Bay Of Plenty all day long then easing in the evening. Quite humid. North of Waikato sees heavy showers with thunderstorms, especially this afternoon. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 22-25

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain with heavy falls easing to showers this morning, rain may not ease about the Central North Island till this evening. East to southeasterly winds, strong about coastal areas.
Highs: 19-24

Eastern North Island

Rain with heavy falls, especially Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Southerly winds.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with spits or showers. Fresh southeasterlies, strong to gale through Cook Strait.
Highs: 20-26

Marlborough & Nelson

Partly cloudy for Marlborough, any morning showers clear with fresh east to southeasterly winds. Nelson sees high cloud thin out during the day and sun increases, southeasterlies tend to the north in the afternoon. Strong to gale southeasterly winds about the outer Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay. Later this evening rain or showers move back in from the north.

Canterbury

Morning showers clear, sunny areas increase from afternoon as southeasterly winds tend east to northeast. Overnight showers or some rain for the Kaikoura area pushing down from the north.
Highs: 19-22

West Coast

Sunny, any morning cloud north of Greymouth clears. Southeasterlies die out in the morning, winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 25-29

Southland & Otago
Sunny for Southland and Central Otago, easterly winds. Coastal Otago has morning cloud then sunny, northeasterlies freshen in the afternoon.
Highs: 20-25
