Saturday’s national forecast – Front moves northwards

A front moves north over the South Island today bringing heavy rain in the west and a few spits out east, the North Island is more settled under a westerly airflow.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly sunny, some cloud though especially in the west but this should start to break up from afternoon. Westerly winds.
Highs: 21-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, some sun in the afternoon. Taranaki and Kapiti have a few light showers. Later in the evening or overnight some rain moves in especially Kapiti. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-20

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny, a touch of high cloud. Spots of rain for Wairarapa overnight. Light north to northwesterly winds, breezier for Wairarapa. Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may see winds tend onshore for a time in the afternoon near the coast.
Highs: 21-24

Wellington

Partly cloudy, showers later in the day and overnight. Blustery north to northwest winds.
Highs: 19-20

Marlborough & Nelson

A mix of sun and cloud, cloud starts to thicken up a little from afternoon, a few spits or showers overnight. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-24

Canterbury

High cloud, a few spits of rain or showers in the afternoon and evening. Northerlies change to the south later in the day.
Highs: 21-24

West Coast

Rain with a few heavy falls, perhaps some thunder. Buller has a dry morning then rain develops around midday as a front closes in, conversely rain eases to showers further south. Northerlies change southwest.
Highs: 17-19

Southland & Otago
Cloudy areas with a few spits or showers, showers for Southland in the morning are a little more frequent then easing. Northerlies change west to southwest in the morning.
Highs: 16-20
