An increasing north to northeasterly airflow lies over the country ahead of a series of fronts moving in from the Tasman Sea.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Early fog possible then cloud thickens up, a few showers from midday turning to areas of rain in the evening. Freshening north to northeasterly winds, strong for some coastal parts overnight especially in the east.
Highs: 14 – 15
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny areas and increasing cloud, a few showers for Taranaki spread elsewhere during the afternoon. Rain sets into Taranaki and Kapiti during the evening and becomes heavy, rain for the Central North Island too. Northerly winds, strong for Taranaki.
Highs: 9 – 15
Eastern North Island
Sun and increasing high cloud, northerly winds may pick up later in the day. Spots of rain from evening especially about Wairarapa.
Highs: 14 – 17
Wellington
Mostly cloudy, a few showers from midday, turning to rain in the evening, chance of a heavy fall overnight. Northerly winds strengthen, gales possible through Cook Strait especially evening.
High: 12
Marlborough & Nelson
Showers develop for Nelson in the morning then Marlborough by midday, during the afternoon rain spreads in from the west with heavy falls possible by evening, easing overnight. Northerly winds strengthen with gales in exposed areas like Golden Bay and the Sounds, easing overnight.
Highs: 12 – 13
Canterbury
Plenty of high cloud with freshening northeasterly winds, a few spots of rain possible late afternoon or evening. From late afternoon expect rain in the high country. Winds tend northerly at night.
Highs: 8 – 12
West Coast
Showers develop in the morning turning to rain by midday, heavy falls south of Greymouth from early afternoon then further north late afternoon. There may be a rumble of thunder. Rain eases overnight. Northeasterlies freshen changing northerly later on.
Highs: 10 – 14
Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy, western parts of Central Otago (Lakes District) may see some rain spread from the west from midday, clearing evening. Northeasterly winds (fresh for coastal Otago) tend northerly at night.
Highs: 10 – 12
