An occluded front pushes northwards over New Zealand today, mainly bringing heavy rain in the west as it moves through, not reaching the North Island till later this evening or overnight.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy areas, chance of a shower, especially in the east (eastern Northland through to BOP). Isolated showers develop in the afternoon with the odd heavy fall possible, perhaps a rumble of thunder then easing in the evening. Later in the evening rain starts moving into western areas then spreading elsewhere overnight with heavy falls. North to northeasterly winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Areas of cloud, some sun at times. A few showers for Taranaki, Kapiti and perhaps the Central North Island turning to rain in the evening, rain then spreads elsewhere with heavy falls possible. Northerly winds, strong about the coast.
Highs: 18-24
Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some increasing high cloud, spots of rain spread into Wairarapa later in the evening. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 24-27
Wellington
Cloudy with some scattered rain, more persistent later in the day. Strong northerlies.
Highs: 18-20
Marlborough & Nelson
Rain, clearing around midnight. Gusty northerly winds.
Highs: 17-19
Canterbury
Plenty of high cloud, some rain in the high country spilling over from the west. A few spots of rain possible around midday then again in the evening elsewhere. Later in the evening skies clear up and cloud clears. Northerly winds.
Highs: 21-24
West Coast
Rain with heavy falls, there may be a few thunderstorms in the evening then rain eases at night. Fresh north to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 17-18
Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud, isolated showers crop up in the afternoon possibly heavy, clearing later in the evening. Northeasterlies tend northerly later in the day.
