A front moves over the Southland today from the south bringing rain to most areas, then moves onto the lower North Island overnight. Ahead of the front expect generally settled weather although some cloud will increase towards evening in the west.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny spells and cloudy areas, west to southwest winds becoming brisk in the afternoon. Skies becoming mostly cloudy later in the evening, overnight a few showers move into Auckland and then towards dawn for Northland.
Highs: 23-24

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells with breezy west to southwest winds, conditions mainly clear about the BOP. Cloud thickens about southern parts of the Central North Island late afternoon then furthern north in the evening. Overnight a few showers move in although the Bay Of Plenty may remain dry.
Highs: 22-24

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some high cloud at times, light winds. Northwesterlies pick up about Wairarapa in the afternoon however and overnight winds change southerly there with showers. Showers more likely further north about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne early the next morning as southerly move in there.
Highs: 28-30

Western North Island
Sunny spells and increasing cloud, becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon with west to northwest winds becoming brisk. Late evening or overnight showers.
Highs: 20-22

Wellington
Sunny spells and increasing cloud, becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon with strong northerlies gusting to gale force at times from midday. Overnight winds change southerly with a few showers.
High: 21

Nelson
Sunny spells and some cloud gradually increasing during the day, northwesterly winds become brisk in the afternoon. A few evening showers then clearing by midnight with winds then changing southwest. Skies clearing up overnight.
High: 23

Marlborough
Sunny with some high cloud, thickening from midday. Northwesterlies become strong in the afternoon. Overnight winds change southerly with some cloud and the chance of a shower.
High: 27

Canterbury
Thickening high cloud with northwesterly breezes, in the evening a southwest change moves through with some cloud and a few showers. Showers a little more widespread later in the evening and overnight for a time.
High: 24

West Coast
Cloudy with rain developing early in the morning for South Westland and around late morning or midday for North Westland, late afternoon rain eases to showers for North Westland as northerlies change southwest. Clear spells develop overnight with southwesterlies easing.
Highs: 17-18

Coastal Otago
Morning rain with the chance of a heavy fall as northerlies change southwest. Rain eases to showers around midday then clears in the evening, sunny spells start to break through from mid to late afternoon.
Highs: 14-15

Central Otago
Morning rain with the chance of a heavy fall as northerlies change southwest. Rain eases to showers around midday then clears by evening, sunny spells start to break through from afternoon too.
High: 15

Southland
Early morning rain with a few heavy falls possible then easing to showers with west to southwest winds freshening. The odd shower continues for the rest of the afternoon and evening, chance of some brief sun at times after midday too.
High: 13
