An anticyclone lies over the North Island today, northwesterlies build further south then a front moves onto the lower South Island later this evening or overnight.
North Island
Mostly sunny for the upper North Island today, light winds then afternoon sea breezes. Mostly sunny for the lower North Island also, winds from the north tending more westerly this afternoon becoming a little gusty near the coast in the west. East to northeasterly winds for coastal Hawkes Bay / Gisborne.
Afternoon temperatures in the mid to late twenties for most North Island regions today, perhaps early thirties for some parts of Hawkes Bay / Gisborne.
South Island
Cloudy for South Westland with the odd shower, becoming more persistent from afternoon then rain with a chance of heavy falls develops in the evening. Some cloud for North Westland, thickening during the day then showers move in later this evening or overnight. Mostly sunny for Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury with west to northwesterly winds, perhaps tending northeast about coastal Canterbury for a time.
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud about Southland and Otago with breezy north to northwesterly winds, later this evening or overnight rain moves into Southland with a southwest change.
Afternoon temperatures in the late twenties for Southland, Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson today. High’s likely to reach into the early thirties for parts of Canterbury and Marlborough. Afternoon high’s in the mid twenties for Buller, late teens or early twenties for the rest of the West Coast.
