The final blast of strong northwesterly winds lie over the country today, ahead of a front that is pushing onto the lower South Island this morning / afternoon then moves further north in the evening. Expect rain for western parts of the country today, dry out east although showers move into coastal Otago / Canterbury as the front mentioned before moves north.

Northland
Cloudy with breezy northerlies, the odd patchy shower about mainly morning with long dry spells into the afternoon. Rain moves in again overnight.

Auckland

Cloudy with breezy northerlies, the odd patchy shower about mainly morning
with long dry spells into the afternoon. Rain moves in again overnight.
Highs: 18-19

Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy with a few light showers / drizzle patches about, northerlies.
High: 17

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloudy with periods of rain, drizzle patches too. Northerly winds.
Highs: 15-17

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, brisk northwesterly winds strong at
times especially about the Wairarapa where gale force winds are possible from
afternoon.
Highs: 19-21

Taranaki

Rain with heavy falls at times especially in the north. Strong northerlies
with winds possibly gusting to gale force at times.
High: 16

Western North Island

Mostly cloudy with the odd brief shower now and then, dry spells too.
Increasing northwesterly winds brisk to strong from midday. Rain more persistent
overnight.
High: 19

Wellington

Cloudy with periods of rain, strong northerlies with gales possible. From
midday gales are fairly likely with a risk of winds gusting to severe gale at
times. Rain heavy for a time later in the evening / overnight.
Highs: 14-15

Nelson

Cloudy with the odd shower, rain from afternoon possibly heavy later in the
day. Brisk northerly winds strong at times from midday.
Highs: 15-16

Marlborough

Strong northwesterlies gale force at times from midday, mostly cloudy skies
with areas of rain mainly afternoon onwards. Rain heavy about the Sounds from
afternoon with gales likely there.
High: 17

Canterbury

Sunny areas and some high cloud, areas of rain spreading into the foothills
from the west. Winds gusty from the northwest, strong about Mid and North
Canterbury in the afternoon with a risk of gales. In the evening winds ease and
some rain moves in.
Highs: 18-19

West Coast

Heavy rain with thunderstorms possible too. Brisk northerly winds. Rain
eases overnight with a southwest change.
High: 14

Coastal Otago

Sunny first thing with northerlies, winds change southwest in the afternoon
bringing a period of showers which clears in the evening.
High: 13

Central Otago

Areas of rain, more persistent about the Southern Lakes area and west of
there, rain becoming more persistent in the east in the evening. Light winds
tend southerly in the afternoon. Snow to 800m in the evening lowers to 400m
overnight then clearing.
High: 9

Southland

Periods of rain with winds changing southwest this morning, rain clears
around midnight. Snow to 800m around midday lowering to 300m in the evening
before clearing.
High: 10
