A front moves onto the South Island this afternoon and evening then the North Island overnight, this brings rain in the west and a few showers out east. Some snow to 400m later in the day in the far south. Expect strong northwesterlies again about the lower North Island and about the North Island’s east coast, gales are possible at times with a chance of severe gale gusts for Wellington.

Auckland & Northland
Mostly cloudy with brisk northwesterlies, strong from afternoon. The odd brief light shower, mainly in the west (long dry spells too). A period of overnight rain as winds change southwest.
Highs: 19-21

Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy with the odd patchy light shower, increasing northwesterly
winds brisk from afternoon. Some brief late evening rain then clearing overnight
with a change to westerlies.
Highs: 18-19

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloudy with patchy rain, brisk northwesterly winds. Rain more persistent in
the evening then clearing overnight with a southwest change.
Highs: 15-17

Eastern North Island

High cloud with a few sunny areas possible, strong northwesterly winds
gusting to gale force at times. Especially in the afternoon. Overnight a brief
southwest change may bring a shower or two.
Highs: 19-21

Western North Island

Cloudy with periods of rain, heavy at times Wanganui northwards. strong
northwesterly winds (gusting to gale at times) changing southwest overnight with
rain clearing.
Highs: 17-18

Wellington

Morning rain eases becoming patchy, a few sunny spells sneak through from
afternoon too. Strong to gale northwesterlies, risk of severe gales at times
especially late afternoon onwards. Winds change gale westerly around midnight
with any remaining showers clearing.
Highs: 16-17

Nelson

Early morning rain eases to the odd shower which clears midday, sunny
spells develop in the afternoon. Brisk northwesterlies strong from late
afternoon. Winds change southwest around midnight.
Highs: 16-17

Marlborough

A few morning showers clear then mostly sunny by midday, brisk
northwesterlies strong from afternoon gusting to gale force at times.
High: 18

Canterbury

Sunny with some high cloud, northwesterlies strengthen in the afternoon. A
strong evening southwest change brings a few showers then clearing by
midnight.
Highs: 16-18

West Coast

Brisk northwesterly winds with showers, rain about South Westland spreads
north mid to late afternoon as a front pushes north. Winds change southwest
behind the front with rain easing back to showers in the evening about North
Westland. Snow in the ranges of South Westland to 500m by evening, 700m further
north by midnight however only a few brief flurries falling in the North
Westland ranges.

Coastal Otago

Mostly sunny with northwesterly winds strengthening. A mid afternoon strong
southwest change brings a period of showers (possibly heavy) with brief snow to
400m by evening then clearing. Skies become clear after midnight, winds remaing
strong from the northwest.
Highs: 13-14

Central Otago

Sunny spells and thickening high cloud with brisk northwesterlies, winds
change cold southwest in the afternoon with some rain then easing to showers in
the evening (showers clear in the evening out east). Some snow to 400m by
evening, mainly in the west.
Highs: 7-8

Southland

Brisk northwesterlies and cloudy skies, the odd shower. Rain develops
afternoon with a strong southwest change, rain then eases to showers in the
evening. Some snow developing to 400m by evening.
Highs: 11-12
