Reports of thunderstorms coming in

There are reports of thunderstorms coming in this afternoon across Waikato and other central and north eastern parts of the North Island.

Latest rain radar shows heavy showers moving across Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

The Lightning Tracker at WeatherWatch.co.nz has recorded 230 strikes in the past hour.

The thunderstorms are moving north east across Waikato, towards Coromandel, across Bay of Plenty and the Central Plateau, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Ranges.

It’s a beautiful evening.

There must be a good jetstream overhead at the moment with the cirriform layer moving really fast from the S-SW.

Interestingly the encroaching altostratus layer is moving a great deal slower.
