Updated 10:25am — Snow flurries continue to fall across some parts of Invercargill and Southland this morning with our NewstalkZB reporter Malcolm Gayfer telling us the Tour of Southland has now been affected.
“The time trial has been cancelled at Winton and a decision on the final stage is being made at midday”. Mr Gayfer says this is quite a “radical decision” for the Tour of Southland which often deals with rough weather conditions.
In Dunedin a light snow shower passed over the city last night while snow was also reported in Balclutha and Queenstown.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says while it’s rare to have snow to such low levels in November it does happen from time to time.
Yesterday’s set up, with a deep low to in the Southern Ocean, allowed a 24 hour window of Antarctic air to cross Southland and neighbouring Otago – but didn’t even stretch as far north as Canterbury.
Despite it still being chilly in the lower South Island this morning the air will gradually warm up today with more spring-like conditions returning tomorrow says WeatherWatch.co.nz.

Overnight Invercargill had Heavy Hail showers which has left a reasonably thick coat of white right across the city. Currently as I look out my window in suburban Invercargill it is definately snowing although it is very wet. Temp 1.3c falling. The airport airways IFIS system says current conditions as rain & snow.

Hail in Invercargill South, very heavy. Massive hailstorm just after midnight which was deafening in my very well insulated home. Still lots of hail about on the ground. Cold!!

Well.. it is 100% snowing here. We are 20mins NE of Invercargill not very high up at all and the grass is now white and it is still falling. However there was just hail overnight and the snow came this morning. Brrr….
