A ridge hangs over New Zealand today, becoming unstable this afternoon / evening about some inland parts of both islands.

For the North Island conditions are mainly dry today however about the ranges along the east coast showers develop late afternoon / evening, some may become heavy with thunderstorms then clearing at night. A few showers may also develop about inland eastern Bay Of Plenty.

For the South Island, some rain about Fiordland eases to showers this afternoon then clearing at night. Showers move into Southland / Otago this afternoon and then also South and Mid Canterbury, showers may be heavy with thunderstorms especially for inland areas then clearing later on tonight. Showers may make it into parts of North Canterbury this evening.
