Several rain warnings have today been issued by the state forecaster for the entire west coast of the South Island and it may have an affect in eastern areas too.

Up to 300mm is forecast to fall in some mountainous parts of the island with spillover into catchment areas for eastern rivers.  These rivers flow through Otago and Canterbury.

Westland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Ranges of Westland south of Arthurs Pass. Rain is expected to be heavy at times overnight Saturday and persist through Sunday till Monday morning. In the 30 hours from midnight Saturday to 6am Monday morning, expect 200 to 250mm of rain about the ranges, and 100 to 120mm near the coast. Peak intensities of 20-30mm/hr Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

Fiordland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Fiordland Rain is expected to become heavy during Saturday evening and persist through Sunday. In the 30 hours from 6pm Saturday to midnight Sunday expect 250 to 300mm of rain, with peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/hr from Sunday morning. 

Christchurch

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Canterbury Headwaters Rain is expected to become heavy Sunday afternoon. In the 15 hours from 3pm Sunday to 6am Monday, expect 100 to 130mm near the Divide, and 80mm within 15km east.

Canterbury Plains

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Canterbury Headwaters Rain is expected to become heavy Sunday afternoon. In the 15 hours from 3pm Sunday to 6am Monday, expect 100 to 130mm near the Divide, and 80mm within 15km east.

Canterbury High Country

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Canterbury Headwaters Rain is expected to become heavy Sunday afternoon. In the 15 hours from 3pm Sunday to 6am Monday, expect 100 to 130mm near the Divide, and 80mm within 15km east.

Dunedin City

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Otago Headwaters Rain is expected to become heavy Saturday night and persist through Sunday. In the 24 hours from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, expect 150mm near the Divide, and 100mm within 15km east.

Otago

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Otago Headwaters Rain is expected to become heavy Saturday night and persist through Sunday. In the 24 hours from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, expect 150mm near the Divide, and 100mm within 15km east. 

Southern Lakes
