Rain sets in across NI, 18 degrees in the SI

Heavier rain is now moving into the upper North Island as a front begins to stall.  Heaviest rain is moving across Waikato, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty.

But gusty winds are keeping conditions incredibly warm in the South Island.  It’s currently 18 degrees in Kaikoura with the nor’wester gusting to 70km/h.

Dunedin and Blenheim both have 14.

But it’s mild in other areas.  It’s currently 15 degrees at Ohakea, Napier, Hastings, Tauranga and Whangarei.

NW winds finally becoming strong and gusty from 5:30pm here after being breezy northerlies for much of the day. Not as strong as 35 years ago, today in 1975 when gale force NW did alot of damage across in Canterbury in similar circumstances but in the early morning.
