Questions asked over railway scrub fires

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Questions are being asked about why a vintage steam train was allowed on a run through tinder dry Otago.

Embers from the engine caused kilometres of spot fires to flare up, as the train made its way back to Dunedin from a trip to Oamaru.

Local man Stephen says the line of fires along the tracks were a sight to behold.

He says it’s surprising because there’s a complete fire ban in the region.

Good grief, what shocking journalism this is. This fire was as close to Timaru as Tauranga is to Auckland. How embarassing!

You may want to rewrite this article, or at least ask Newstalk to do so. Oamaru was as far as that train ran from Dunedin. Timaru is north of there…

Hi Andrew – all came from ZB, so we’ve changed the title.  Agree with these two comments – not their best piece of work!
