Queenstown gearing up for ski season

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Queenstown’s premier ski areas are gearing up for a bumper season.

The Remarkables ski area has received 15 centimetres of snow, with four centimetres falling on Coronet Peak.

Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie says the snowfall and cooler air temperatures combine to help cool the ground and make for good snow making conditions.

“We’re bringing on our snow makers this week and the system will be put into full automation this weekend and we’ll make snow as conditions permit from then on,” he told Newstalk ZB. “Our planned opening day is Saturday June 4, so we’re working towards that. It’s less than three weeks now so we’re very excited.”

The Remarkables open on June 18.
