Public discussion over Waimakariri River dump

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Those lobbying against the dumping of waste into the Waimakariri River will have a chance to speak at the second day of an Environment Canterbury hearing this morning.

The hearing’s in response to a Silver Fern Farms application, requesting permission to dump up to three-thousand-500 cubic metres of waste into the river daily, when it can’t be sent to the earthquake-damaged Bromley Treatment Plant.

Today will be an opportunity for opponents of the waste dump, such a Fish and Game, to present their cases to ECAN.

The application has already drawn strong opposition, with a two-thousand-signature petition signed by local residents presented to ECAN during public submissions.

The hearing is expected to run until Friday.
