UPDATED 5:51pm — A magnitude 7.6 quake, just 10kms deep (according to the USGS) has hit near Noumea, New Caledonia north of New Zealand.
New Zealand Civil Defence has just issued a statement saying there is NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO NEW ZEALAND.
A short time before WeatherWatch.co.nz said the region wasn’t known for generating serious tsunami for New Zealand but everyone should keep up to date with more information as it comes in this evening.
Despite the “no tsunami threat” New Zealanders should remain aware of conditions as Civil Defence advice in this area hasn’t always been top notch, but WeatherWatch.co.nz supports the latest Civil Defence update below:

Looks like the nearest wave height buoys all went into “Event Mode”. Roughly 10cm drop on each. I’m no expert on how to interpret that however.
