Although it’s associated with snow and winter, memories of Christmas day for many kiwis consist of sand, sun and sausages – because it falls, of course, in the Southern Hemisphere summer.

However poll results are split – we asked “What’s your Christmas weather wish?” and the majority – 57% – of respondents voted for sunshine.

Which means nearly half of the population don’t have “Sunny and hot” as a Christmas Day weather priority.

“This poll may make news reporters rethink the angle of news stories and headlines they write about Christmas – as there is clearly no such thing as “good” or “perfect” Christmas Day forecast” says head weather analyst Philip Duncan.  “Sun and heat for one region may be the worst forecast for the region next door wanting rain”.

Just behind in second place may have been those on the wrong end of Novembers harsh, dry winds – sucking the moisture out of the soil in some places – as “rain, rain and more rain” got 14% of the vote.

Hail, sleet and anything wintry was just behind on 9% – maybe those from the northern climes, feeling a bit homesick?

Remember to check out our new poll, coming on Sunday morning!
