It’s certainly been in all the media – news about the thunderstorms across New Zealand.
But some people who have missed out on a thunderstorm passing over have still seen the lightning.
Weather analyst Richard Green says he could clearly see lightning flickering over the Southern Alps in the early hours of this morning – despite being in Canterbury which was dry with clear skies at the time.
We’re running a poll to see how many of our readers have seen lightning or heard thunder (or both!) over the past few days. We’ve also modified the poll rules which means if your answer changes overnight you can change your vote on Tuesday!

Been very dissapointing here with no lightning or flashes seen to the west from West Melton even though been looking very much so to the west after dark.
There was a thunderstorm that passed to the south of us this afternoon and around Banks Peninsula which was the first thunderstorm in the region for ages, well since before the earthquakes.

Have had distant thunder in east Auckland but pretty disappointing, would be nice to get a real storm for a change!

yes had thunder/lightening here in Dargaville/Kaipara area. Yes it would of been around 2007 when a man doing a horse hunt in Dargaville was struck by lightening, and died.

I was mystified last night at the lightning in the sky along with the millions of stars. First time I’ve seen ligthening happen with no clouds around.

Hi there
With the storms that have gone over Auckland etc, was that the worst of the weather? or is there more out to sea that has not made land full yet? We have got some rain here in Te Puke, 12.0mm since 12am, winds have drop right off now, ave wind speed over 10 min is 6.1 km/h, Temp 11.4c the barometer is at 993.0 hPa and falling -0.4 hPa/hr

Here in Dunedin Otago we have escaped the depredations of the fierce cyclonic westerly storms.
We have had about 7mm of rain and little else. We tend to get sunny skies and gusty westerlies.
We may as well have been on another planet after reading, viewing and hearing about the devestation occurring around us.
Note. Cyclonic westerlies do not affect Dunedin or Otago north of Balclutha – not in any substantive way. Cheers ” Peter the Gardener”
