Officially – it’s hot!

WeatherWatch.co.nz

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Temperature gauges right across New Zealand are soaring around the 30 degree mark this afternoon.  Official readings, taken mostly from airports, show the summer heat is kicking in from one end of the country to the other.

In Auckland it’s officially 27 degrees this hour, with weatherwatch.co.nz estimating a number of suburbs are in the lower 30s thanks to heating from roads and buildings.

It’s 28 in Paeroa, 26 in Taupo and Whangarei and 31 across inland Wairarapa.   Lower Hutt and Hamilton both also have 27 degrees.

In the South Island it’s 30 in Blenheim and at Dunedin Airport, 28 in Christchurch and Timaru and 27 in Oamaru.

Yesterday Culverden took the national high with 37 degrees officially and today temperatures are likely to continue to rise in some areas until about 5pm.

Official temperatures are taken from specially designed boxes which measure the air temperature in it’s purist form and often don’t represent the actual temperatures being felt by people in towns, beaches or even your back yard.

If you have a thermometer let us know how hot it is where you!  Post a comment below.

It’s 11.25 and still 28 degrees indoors. Too hot to sleep. It would be nice to be able to camp out, but there are too many rampaging mosquitoes!

Where I was today at Long Bay the wind was light Southerly then easterly “seabreezist” then a light SW late in the afternoon,it felt around 29-30¬∞ and beautiful there much warmer than S. Auckland, can see the wind must of been fresh here looking at the pine needles.

temperatures here – does that make me a weather nerd?
Anyway, we are rural about 20 minutes inland from the Bay of Islands. Yesterday the BOI official temp was 22. I thought it was much warmer than that! Today the reading from our brand new shiny thermometer ( in the shade.of course!) was 35 – that’s more like what it felt like!

Where are Auckland’s readings coming from these days? Looking at this: http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/NZAA.html
there’s no way the airport reached 27.

We are warmer out this way (east of the city) when there are NW / W/ SW winds and my weather station reports 27.3 today as the maximum.

We use the official readings from Whenuapai usually as it much closer to the central city and seems to more accurately represent the temperature Aucklanders feel.   You’re right about Auckland Airport not reaching 27… it’s only been around 23/24 for much of the afternoon!   Definitely wasn’t 24 at my house today!

Cheers

That’s pretty hot!   With the "humidex" that feels more like 38 degrees.

Humidity is around 40 to 50% across much of the upper North Island.
