NEW POLL: How do you sleep in winter?

> From the WeatherWatch archives

With winter well and truly on its way, we here at Weatherwatch have been getting a number of people commenting that they’re already enjoying the cooler nights – from a sleeping perspective!

Some people maintain that winter is easier to sleep – wrapped up in blankets rather than tossing and turning in the summer heat.

So what do you think? Is winter an easier time to get your rest, or do you prefer a summer climate with a cool breeze for sleeping?

Let us know in the poll, and tell us why in the comments!

It’s funny – almost every year without fail – we get a decent cold snap (Chch – April) so we finally decide to chuck on the winter duck-down douvet & flanelette sheets…then what happens ?
NW heat for days…u gotta laugh !
Now that we are in May however, even after a warm day – we are v. v. unlikely to get a warm night – just not enough solar input any more down here…winter has begun. Sleeping is COZY…nice 🙂

LOL not like Auckland here. Had to get up a few times in April to flick the heater on with cold overnight temperatures. Had it on a fair bit over April with low temps and 0C several times. Jan//Feb were also bad months for that. Our mountain froze solid in Jan and March … summer.  Got sick from the very crisp SW air in April, when it was around 4C and 41% and up against the warmer SE … something colder than an SE is unreal in itself. Have enjoyed the warmth from the Westerlies ex Oz though at night times, but a rogue cold/arid SW keeps spoiling it.  Been a very, very strange summer for lack of humidity and the South Island haranguing us. Mountain drainage & inversion has been cold this summer too and was frigid on occasions in March … stable air. Otaki people also complaining about very cold mornings over summer and needing a heater on, and also like us with stinking hot afternoon drainage. My order is for a return to nice, mild nights with wind in one direction or with one temp only. It has been a summer of extremes.

I HATE sleeping in winter! First I go to bed with cold feet so I can’t get to sleep until they warm up. Then I wake up with cold ears and don’t want to get out of bed. And the weight of so many blankets in winter is oppressive too. I could carry on about the many horrid things about sleeping in winter, let’s just leave it at I’m a summer sleeper!

And don’t forget the midnight toilet trips which leave you conflicted on leaving your warm nest, or to hold a bursting bladder (and not able to fall asleep)! Once you’re back in bed it takes a while until you can stop shivering and fall back to sleep!

It’s just way harder to get out of bed in the morning as well, who would want to leave their warm blankets?

I prefer summer much more as well! 🙂
