A southerly airflow lies over most of New Zealand today, about Northland and Auckland winds tend more southwest this morning then swing to the southeast by midday. A high sneaks onto the lower South Island this morning then spreads onto the rest of the island later today.
For the North Island expect morning rain or showers Waikato southwards to mostly clear although hanging about the east coast till around midnight. Rain along the east coast may be heavy first thing this morning. The odd shower moves into Coromandel then Northland during this afternoon / evening. Areas of sun breaking through anywhere rain clears.
Fairly cloudy along the east coast of the South Island, a few morning showers about Canterbury and Marlborough clear then cloud breaks later in the day with easing southerly winds.
Sunny areas and some cloud for Southland and coastal Otago with southerly winds easing later in the day, mostly sunny elsewhere over the South Island with light winds. Winds about Farewell Spit and the outer Marlborough Sounds will likely be strong from the southeast today.
