Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
STILL WINDY, BUT CALMING DOWN
We had very strong northwesterlies over the weekend with winds peaking on Sunday. The eastern South Island, through Cook Strait and the lower North Island experienced the strongest winds.
Today while winds are still blustery and strong in certain areas from the west they are easing, this evening winds will have calmed down quite a bit for many. Tomorrow the weather is reasonably pleasant wind wise for most.
Here are a few reports from our twitter page on the winds in the weekend:
SETTLED ON TUESDAY, WARM IN THE EAST AND NORTH
Tuesday does see a west to northwesterly airflow lie over the country but it’s reasonably settled.
The West Coast will have cloud though with morning rain easing to showers, sun may even break through then rain returns again at night. There will also be the odd shower for the southwestern corner of the North Island too (Taranaki through to Kapiti).
But back to where it will be settled, the upper North Island (Waikato / Bay Of Plenty northwards) and right down alongside the eastern side will see sunny warm weather. Enjoy!
BECOMING QUITE WARM ON WED, BIG FRONT THU / FRI
Temperatures really warm up in the east and for the upper North Island on Wednesday with the airflow originating from Australia, highs get into the mid twenties, the eastern North Island may even reach the late twenties.
Warm temperatures continue again on Thursday in the east and for the upper North Island but it’ll be the eastern North Island where temperatures are warmest. The eastern South Island while it will get warm also sees upper air temperatures slip away a little, these help influence temperatures at the surface.
A big front moves onto the lower South Island Thursday morning then slowly marches northwards to reach the North Island on Friday. Heavy rain is likely in the west with a chance of thunder, strong northwesterlies again in the east. Behind the front there may be instability in showers moving up the east coast of the South Island on Friday.
Any watches and warnings by Metservice that get issued in the coming days can be seen here.
