Monday’s News: Heavy rain watch, upper NI – Good weather West Coast and Far South – Heavy rain potential Tasman / Nelson Tuesday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

HEAVY RAIN WATCHES IN THE NORTH

An occluded front moving slowly down over the upper North Island today brings with it a chance of heavy rain.

A few rain watches have been issued by Metservice, rainfall may approach warnings criteria especially in the east.

Rainfall watches from Metservice can be seen here.

BEST WEATHER WEST COAST & SOUTHLAND / CENTRAL OTAGO

An east to northeasterly airflow lies over the country today, therefore eastern and northern regions are likely to see cloud cover.

Sheltered parts like Central Otago, Southland and the West Coast are looking good. Southland and Central Otago may have some morning cloud or fog but this should break away to reveal a good afternoon. There may be a touch of high cloud about for any of the aforementioned regions but it’s looking good otherwise.

The southwestern corner of the North Island should have a good day also (southern Taranaki through to Kapiti).

While the above is true and it is the general rule for today considering the airflow, Northland will lie between fronts as an occluded front moves away to the south and a trough lies out in the Tasman Sea. So there is a good chance Northland will have some warm weather and sun.

HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL TOP OF THE SOUTH ISLAND – TUESDAY

A trough moving in from the Tasman Sea feeds down a few heavy showers or perhaps some heavy rain into the upper South Island on Tuesday.

Any watches or warnings from Metservice if they come to the fore can be seen here.
