Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..
HEAVY RAIN WEST COAST TODAY, EAST COAST TOMORROW
A northerly airflow lies over the South Island today bringing rain into the West Coast, expect heavy falls south of about Greymouth. This evening rain spreads north into Buller and becomes heavy there overnight, during tomorrow heavy rain will clear from the south as a southerly airflow kicks in, rain doesn’t clear Buller till evening.
Today eastern regions for the South Island are dry and warm apart from Southland and Otago, they see showers from this afternoon then rain in the evening. Overnight tonight rain moves into Canterbury as a southerly airflow kicks in thanks to a low crossing the South Island from the Tasman Sea. Rain is heavy for Canterbury tomorrow about inland areas, it will start to ease from the south afternoon on wards clearing in evening.
Tasman and Nelson has heavy rain tomorrow, spreading into Marlborough during the afternoon then easing overnight for all.
HEAVY SNOW IN THE RANGES TUESDAY – SOUTH ISLAND
Northerly and southerly airflow’s clash over the South Island on Tuesday, the northerlies bring moisture / heavy rain meanwhile the southerlies bring some cold air east of the Main Divide.
The air isn’t super cold but cold enough that snow may fall to 600m for Southland and to around 700m in Canterbury.
North Otago northwards into Canterbury has a risk of heavy snow above 700m on Tuesday, easing from the south from afternoon, clearing evening. Snow for Canterbury in the high country may reach a touch lower (600m) if precipitation is heavy enough but the bulk of any heavy snow will most likely be above about 700 to 800m.

STRADDLED BY HIGHS ON THURSDAY
There are a few interesting features to come this week but Thursday is when it looks like most of the country will be settled thanks to a few large high’s either side of New Zealand straddling both Islands. A low to the north may bring showers into Northland.
