Monday’s national forecast – Unsettled weather moving in (+12 maps)

A cold front pushes northwards over the South Island today then the North Island overnight, expect rain in the west as this front moves through (heavy for the West Coast). Some rain also in the east eventually with a southwest change.

North Island

Areas of cloud in the west, risk of a light shower about New Plymouth and Kapiti. In the evening showers build then turning to rain overnight. Westerlies tend northwest by midday. Sunny areas and increasing high cloud in the east, overnight spots of rain spread from the west. North to northwesterly winds strengthen through Cook Strait rising to gale from afternoon.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast with showers and freshening northeasterly winds, showers spreading into Buller around midday. Heavy rain for Fiordland from this morning then reaching Buller later this afternoon, rain starts clearing about Fiordland from this evening as winds tend southwest. Nelson and Marlborough see thickening high cloud, some rain spreads into Nelson later this afternoon from the west then reaching into Marlborough. High cloud for the east coast with northerlies, rain spreads into Southland this morning, reaching Otago this afternoon then Canterbury this evening with southwesterlies. Snow possible to 600m overnight for Southland and Otago.

So nice to see ‘Unsettled’ in the headline, rather than ‘Wild Weather’ at the first hint of hail or a thunderstorm.
