Monday’s national forecast – T/Storms Central NI

High pressure starts to sneak in over the South Island today, southerlies further north bring wet weather, thunderstorms are likely this afternoon for central parts of the North Island. Southwesterlies for Northland and Auckland bring a mix of sun and cloud, risk of a shower.

North Island

Chance of a fog patch this morning for the upper North Island then expect a mix of sun and cloud with gentle southwesterlies, chance of a shower mainly for Northland. Mostly cloudy south of Taranaki and up the east coast with southerlies, isolated showers this morning becoming more widespread by midday. Heavy downpours, thunderstorms and a risk of hail developing this afternoon about the Central North Island, southern Waikato and Bay Of Plenty, easing later this evening. Showers clear this evening Palmerston North through to southern Taranaki, perhaps also clearing north of Gisborne.

South Island

Sunny along the West Coast and for Southland, Otago has a mix of sun and cloud with cloud building about inland areas this afternoon then breaking up a little this evening. Canterbury is mostly cloudy however sun will break this afternoon especially for coastal parts, a few showers hang about North Canterbury during the day, perhaps stretching south along the foothills this afternoon then all showers clear in the evening. Nelson and Marlborough has showers, rain this morning for Tasman clears away, this afternoon isolated heavy showers develop for Tasman, easing later on. Light winds for the West Coast and in the far south, northeasterlies for coastal Otago, east to southeasterly winds for Canterbury, southerlies for Nelson and Marlborough.
