Monday’s national forecast – SW eases

A southwesterly airflow eases over the country today, a trough in this flow brings heavy showers to the northwestern corner of the South Island this morning then easing. High pressure moves in as the SW airflow eases.

North Island

Showers in the south and up the east coast (coastal fringe in the east this morning, little more widespread from afternoon), breaking away this evening with only the odd shower remaining for Mahia Peninsula as south to southwesterly winds die away. Partly cloudy for the upper North Island, the odd shower for Waikato and Auckland, perhaps southern parts of Northland), mostly clearing this evening. Northland and Bay Of Plenty are mainly dry. There is a chance East Cape may have a few heavy showers, clearing later on. From evening cloud clears in the west and eventually for the upper North Island. There may be a light frost this morning for some inland spots, overnight frost are more widespread and a bit heavier.

South Island

Sunny for the lower South Island after a frosty start, coastal cloud for Southland may deliver a shower or two with westerlies, showers more widespread for Southland overnight. Canterbury has early morning showers and a few snow flurries to 200m clear then mostly sunny with southwesterlies dying away. Morning cloud clears Marlborough then sunny. A few morning showers for Nelson then afternoon sunny spells break through. Tasman has showers, some may be heavy, easing this afternoon then eventually clearing.
