A cold south to southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today then conditions settle down more on Tuesday especially in the east.

North Island
Winds through Cook Strait and up either side of the North Island will likely be gale force this morning especially about coastal parts then gradually starting to ease from afternoon especially in the west. Heavy showers in the east and west south of Taranaki, small hail too then easing a touch from afternoon but continuing the rest of today. Heavy showers north of Auckland this morning with a chance of hail / thunder then easing, Bay Of Plenty is mostly sunny after any morning showers clear.
South Island
Mostly sunny for the West Coast, Nelson / Marlborough. Showers in the east although dry about South Canterbury and inland Mid Canterbury. Showers clear north of about Rakaia from this evening. Showers mostly clearing Otago during the morning but remaining for Southland.
Snow and frosts
Snow flurries to 400m for the North Island for the lower half and in the east, possibly as low as 300m at times about the ranges of Wellington / Wairarapa. Eastern South Island sees low level snow (200m) then gradually lifting from this afternoon, lifting above 800m at night but by then showers would have cleared for most. Heavy frosts overnight for inland areas north of Central Otago where skies are clear and winds drop out. Central North Island up to Waikato may get frosts too.
