A northeasterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, flowing between a high to our east and a low in the Tasman Sea. An occluded front between the two pressure systems lies over the upper North Island bringing rain.
North Isand
Mostly cloudy for the upper North Island, breezy east to northeasterly winds. Rain for Northland clears this morning with sunny spells developing, there may be an isolated shower or two left behind once a frontal band moves south towards Auckland otherwise it should be mainly dry. Overnight showers more likely for northern Northland. Auckland sees rain, especially in the north (maybe a few heavy falls), spreading a little further south in the afternoon. Waikato and Bay Of Plenty are mainly dry, northern Waikato may start to see showers from afternoon, in the evening showers or some rain becoming more widespread for Waikato, perhaps getting into Tauranga also. Partly cloudy for the rest of the North Island, Taranaki (more so coastal Taranaki) should see showers or some rain at times. In the east there may be a light shower or two, especially south of Napier.
South Island
Mostly cloudy in the east, one or two light showers, maybe some drizzle, east to northeasterly winds. Southland and Central Otago are mostly sunny after any morning cloud or fog clears. Mostly sunny along the West Coast with a touch of high cloud. Nelson has partly cloudy skies. Cloud increases along the West Coast and about the top of the South Island from evening, showers move into Tasman, Nelson then Buller overnight.
