A northerly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a frontal system waiting in the wings out in the Tasman Sea, ready to move over the country on Tuesday.

North Island
The upper North Island has some high and mid level cloud, the odd shower for Coromandel through to Northland spreading elsewhere this afternoon but still plenty of dry areas. Dry in the southwest with high cloud, showers move into Taranaki and Kapiti overnight. The east coast had a dry day with sun and high cloud, temperatures in the late teens. North to northwesterly winds through Cook Strait are strong.
South Island
The West Coast has a cloudy day with showers, a few showers getting into Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds from this afternoon. Rain moves into the West Coast this evening becoming heavy later on / overnight with thunderstorms, rain overnight for Nelson / Marlborough too. A dry day for the east coast with high cloud and temperatures in the late teens, breezy north to northwesterly winds. Later this evening southerlies move into Southland with rain, moving into Otago overnight.
