The airflow over the South Island moves east to west today, this means cloudy skies in the east with showers or patchy rain, perhaps some instability in the west especially Buller. The North Island has a slack pressure gradient with light onshore winds, instability this afternoon leads to a few thunderstorms.

North Island

Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas, light winds this morning then afternoon sea breezes. Expect a few showers in the west (Taranaki south) and in the east (Bay Of Plenty included). Showers becoming heavy for some this afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms then easing this evening, more details on where by looking at today’s thunderstorm outlook from Metservice here.

South Island

Mostly cloudy in the south and east, southerly winds for Southland and Otago, easterly winds further north in the east. Expect showers for many although it may be dry for Southland and Otago this morning, showers becoming unstable this afternoon for some in the west and especially about Buller.
