Monday’s national forecast – Instability incoming

A low centred just to the south brings some very cold upper air from today, thunderstorms with hail are possible for the West Coast. The North Island has a cold front move in from the west.

North Island

Rain this morning in the southwest (Taranaki through to Kapiti), the upper North Island is drier although a few showers are possible especially in the west. Rain or showers moving into the upper North Island from the Tasman Sea during this afternoon. Mainly dry in the east with sun and high cloud, spits of rain or showers start moving into Hawkes Bay later this afternoon, Gisborne this evening. Winds mostly from the northwest, changing southwest for the upper North Island this evening.

South Island

Showers for the West Coast, heavy at times with thunderstorms and hail, especially from this afternoon south of about Greymouth. Nelson and Marlborough are sunny after any early showers clear. A mix of sun and cloud in the east, there may be a few spits or showers, Canterbury especially then breaking away this afternoon to sunny skies. Winds from the northwest generally but southerly this morning for Canterbury near the coast.
