Monday’s national forecast – Heavy rain Sth Westland

A northeasterly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a few fronts organising out in the Tasman Sea and over the lower South Island especially in the west. Zooming out a bit further a large high still sits out to our east, low pressure is in the Tasman Sea.

North Island

Partly cloudy skies with showers in the northeast (East Cape across to Northland), showers also moving into parts of the Central North Island. Northeasterly winds.

South Island

Mostly cloudy along the West Coast and for Nelson with showers, rain south of Greymouth, becoming heavy for South Westland this afternoon then heavy rain spreads northwards overnight. Morning low cloud or fog possible in the east then expect sun and high cloud, Southland and Otago sees cloud thicken. Rain develops about the Lakes District, spreading elsewhere for a time late afternoon although coastal / northern Otago may stay dry. Winds from the northeast, becoming gusty for the West Coast, overnight Canterbury northwards in the east sees blustery northeasterlies.
