High pressure for the South Island, low pressure brings some wet weather further north.
North Island
Partly cloudy skies with the risk of a shower for the upper North Island, this afternoon isolated heavy showers may form with a risk of thunder then easing at night (Auckland and Waikato especially), winds from the south or southeast. Rain for the east coast, heavy falls possible for Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa then easing overnight. Rain in the west eases this afternoon, clearing by evening, Wellington should be mainly dry with sunny spells breaking through this afternoon, southeasterly winds.
South Island
Mostly cloudy in the east with a drizzle patch or shower then drying out this afternoon with sunny spells breaking through, winds pick up from the east or northeast. Cloud may be a bit slower in clearing South Canterbury through to coastal Otago. Mostly sunny for Southland, Central Otago has a mix of sun and cloud, isolated showers develop this afternoon, some may become heavy with thunder then clearing later on. Sunny spells along the West Coast and for Nelson, chance of an isolated shower about the ranges this afternoon. Showers for inland Tasman / Buller may become heavy with thunder then clearing later on. Winds from the southwest along the West Coast and for Southland, northerlies for Nelson.
