Monday’s national forecast – Front sweeps over

A low pressure system west of the South Island pushes a front over New Zealand moving from west to east, unstable falls possible in behind the front for the North Island. A strong northeasterly airflow starts changing to the north from afternoon.

North Island

Showers and sunny spells for the upper North Island, there may be isolated thunderstorms and heavy downpours especially this afternoon then easing evening. Bay Of Plenty has more persistent rain and a chance of heavy falls, easing from this afternoon as a front moves eastwards. Scattered rain spreads into the east coast (Gisborne to Wairarapa) this morning, rain picks up a little this afternoon for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne while clearing further south, rain clears further north at night. Showers in the southeast (Taranaki through to Wellington), although Taranaki itself may have rain, a few sunny areas start to break through from afternoon. Blustery northeasterlies tend to the north from afternoon.

South Island

Rain the west and for Nelson and Marlborough, heavy falls especially about South Westland and Tasman / Nelson. Rain starts to ease for the top of the South Island from afternoon but not for the West Coast till overnight. From late afternoon or evening there may be thunder. The east coast has thick high cloud, spits of rain in the morning then clearing afternoon with sun starting to make an appearance. Southland and Otago may see more frequent areas of rain, morning and evening especially. Northeasterly winds, strong for coastal areas but easing later in the day, overnight north to northwesterly winds for North Canterbury may still be a bit blustery.
