Monday’s national forecast – Front moves through, heavy rain in the north

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A front pushes over New Zealand from the west today, northeasterly winds ahead of the front then changing to the north or northwest. Some instability is possible today too especially for the upper North Island.

North Island

Rain for the upper North Island with heavy falls, gradually easing to showers this afternoon as northeasterlies change to the northwest. Showers north of about Auckland may become heavy with thunderstorms this afternoon then easing this evening. Scattered rain in the south (Taranaki through to Wellington), winds from the northeast eventually tending to the north this evening. Scattered spots of rain for the east coast then becoming more persistent this afternoon, clearing overnight as northeasterlies change to the north.

South Island

Rain for the West Coast and about Nelson and Marlborough, morning scattered rain in the east and south then clearing but plenty of high cloud hanging around all day long. Winds from the north or northeast.
