Monday’s national forecast – Front moves in

A front moves into the South Island today with heavy rain developing for the West Coast, northerly winds strengthen before the front, changing southwest for the lower South Island overnight.

North Island

Mostly cloudy for the upper North Island with northeasterly winds, the odd shower about especially in the east (Bay Of Plenty up through to eastern Northland). Eastern regions have a sunny day with warm temperatures and northerly winds. Expect partly cloudy skies in the southwest (Taranaki through to Wellington), strong to gale northerlies through Cook Strait.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast with a few showers, rain moves into South Westland in the afternoon bringing heavy falls then moving northwards later in the evening / overnight, northeasterly winds build then change west to southwest later in the day or overnight. Dry in the east with high cloud and gusty afternoon northerlies, rain develops in the high country late afternoon or evening. Overnight a southwest change about the lower South Island brings showers.
