Monday’s national forecast – Front approaches to the south

A weak front lies over the North Island today bringing a narrow band of showers, high pressure either side and mainly settled. The South Island has a developing northwesterly airflow ahead of a front, the front moves onto the lower South Island overnight.

North Island

North of about Auckland expect some sun, some high cloud too, winds are light. Northeastern coastal parts of Northland could see some cloud and a shower. South of Auckland through to about Lake Taupo a weak front brings cloudier skies and a few showers. Further south breaks to sunshine again but there may still be some high cloud. Cloud a bit thicker for the likes of Kapiti though with northwesterlies there.

South Island

The West Coast is a bit cloudy, showers for Fiordland then gradually spreading northwards. Rain moves into Fiordland this evening then pushes northwards overnight with the chance of a heavy fall. Mostly sunny in the east for Nelson down through to Otago, there could be some morning coastal cloud with the chance of a light shower then clearing (Banks Peninsula for example). Winds from the northwest but tending northeast along the coastal fringe. Southland has partly cloudy skies, the odd coastal spit or shower, rain develops this evening then moves into Otago overnight and Canterbury around dawn on Tuesday with strong southwesterlies gale about the coast.
