Monday’s national forecast – Cold SW

A cold southwesterly airflow spreads over the North Island this morning, high pressure starts moving in over the South Island especially later today.

North Island

Showers for the upper North Island, some may be heavy with thunder and hail, clearing away later this afternoon or evening as strong to gale southwesterlies change more to the south. Showers remain in the west north of Auckland overnight. Showers for Wellington and Wairarapa this morning with strong to gale southerlies, showers spread further north into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne around midday (possibly heavy with thunder about the coast) as strong to gale south to southwest winds move north. Showers in the east ease this evening.

South Island

Sunny along the West Coast, morning showers clear Buller, southerlies. Morning showers clear Nelson then Marlborough, becoming mostly sunny after showers clear. Showers for Southland and Otago ease, clearing this afternoon with sun breaking through (snow to 400m). Showers for Canterbury (heavy north of the Rakaia River with snow to 700m) ease from afternoon, clearing this evening. Southwesterlies in the east die out this evening. Frosty overnight especially inland.
