A low moves towards the North Island from the Tasman Sea then crosses overnight, the upper North Island is in for some wet and potential unstable weather today. The South Island is a bit calmer with a few fronts brushing the far south.
North Island
Showers, a few sunny spells. Rain moves into Northland this morning, reaching Auckland around midday then further south in the afternoon. There may be the odd isolated heavy fall with thunder, especially in the far north. Overnight northerly quarter winds change to the south, rain becomes heavy for Bay Of Plenty. South of Taranaki through to Wellington expect the odd shower or spit with northerly winds. The east coast has a mainly dry day with sun and developing high cloud, overnight spits of rain north of Napier, perhaps some rain for Gisborne.
South Island
Cloud along the West Coast, perhaps a few showers then cloud and showers start to break up this afternoon, winds from the northeast and easing. Nelson and Marlborough have partly cloudy skies, Tasman has showers that clear in the evening. The Marlborough Sounds may see a few showers in the evening. Down along the east coast has a chance of morning mid and high level cloud then breaking to mostly sunny weather this afternoon. Southland has cloud move in this morning thanks to a cold front, expect a few showers then clearing up this afternoon, further showers overnight thanks to a warm front. Otago stays mainly dry but some cloud may move in from the south.
