An anticyclone sits out west of New Zealand today while a low pressure system lies out to the east of the North Island. In between is a southwesterly airflow which will bring showers to the southern half and West Coast of the South Island, the North Island will remain largely dry with showers in the east clearing by afternoon. Southwesterlies will be quite strong about Auckland in the afternoon.

Upper North Island

A mix of sunny areas and some cloud today with breezy southwesterly winds becoming strong in the west during the afternoon possibly even gusting to gale force at times, winds a bit lighter about Bay Of Plenty however still breezy. Gisborne will see a few showers clearing in the afternoon and perhaps a few sunny periods sneaking in by evening, southerlies.
HIGHS: 24-27, high 20’s about Bay Of Plenty, 24 in Gisborne.

Lower North Island

Breezy westerlies with a mix of sunny areas and some cloud in the west, winds becoming strong in the afternoon. Sunny periods in Wellington and the Wairarapa with light winds, increasing west to northwest winds after midday then later in the evening a change to cool southerlies with some cloud. Showers about Hawkes Bay clear by midday with a few sunny breaks developing in the afternoon, southerly breezes die out by late afternoon.
HIGHS: 19-21 in the West, 26-28 in the east

Upper South Island

Southwesterly breezes on the West Coast north of Hokitika, expect cloudy areas with some sun. The odd shower possible at times but mainly dry till evening when showers become more likely. Mostly sunny in Nelson down through to Canterbury along the east coast with light winds. Westerlies may pick up about Nelson and Marlborough in the evening with some cloud, in Canterbury southerlies move through late afternoon or early evening with cloud and the odd shower which then clears at night.
HIGHS: 17-18 on the West Coast. 25 for Nelson, 26-28 in Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

Gusty westerlies about Fiordland and Southland with rain or showers, showers spread into Otago during the morning with west to southwest winds becoming quite strong about southeastern Otago. Showers clearing from around Dunedin north on the east coast from afternoon however continuing in most other places.
