A ridge of high pressures lies over the South Island today while a southerly quarter airflow for the North Island brings rain or showers in the south and east.

North Island
Mostly sunny for the upper North Island although Northland has some cloud and a few showers, mainly later in the day. Wellington has some rain, a chance of heavy falls especially in the east. Showers about Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay, rain moves into Wairarapa in the afternoon possibly heavy. Gisborne just sees the odd spit today.
South Island
Mostly sunny for the West Coast and about Southland and Otago with light winds after a frosty start, Buller has some cloud and the risk of a shower though especially from afternoon. Canterbury and Marlborough are mostly cloudy with the odd spit or shower, light winds tend to the east in the afternoon and any showers clear evening with cloud breaking away. Nelson has any early showers clear then dry. Later in the evening or overnight some cloud and a few showers moves into Fiordland.
