A ridge pushes in over the South Island today meanwhile a gusty south to southeasterly airflow for the North Island eases during the day.

North Island

For the upper North Island some morning cloud may bring a shower or two then becoming mostly sunny by afternoon, breezy south to southeasterly winds ease during the day. The odd shower about Northland especially in the east may not clear till evening however. Expect a similar outlook for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Kapiti) however a shower or two may spill over into Manawatu from the east through till evening.

A cloudy day can be expected along the east coast with areas of rain or showers, easing later in the evening or overnight. Winds breezy from the south.

South Island

Expect a sunny day for the West Coast and Nelson, winds from the south or southeast at first then tending onshore during the afternoon. Some morning cloud about the far south with a shower or two for coastal Otago then clearing to become mostly sunny in the afternoon, south to southwesterly winds die away. Showers clear by midday for most of Canterbury but one or two may linger about the coast of North Canterbury through till evening, cool southwesterlies ease. Any morning cloud about Marlborough clears then mostly sunny with southeasterly winds (gale about the outer sounds) easing during the day.

Temperatures

Temperatures for the western North Island reaching into the early twenties, cool in the east with mid to high teen temperatures. High teens or perhaps early twenties for the West Coast of the South Island, Nelson and Central Otago. Low to mid teen temperatures elsewhere.
