A strong northwesterly airflow develops over New Zealand today, cloudy for many western regions with showers or rain. Auckland northwards sees sunny areas however. Mostly sunny in the east of the country however expect high cloud and windy conditions for the South Island’s east coast.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Sunny areas and some cloud with northwesterly winds, there could be some early mist or fog which clears. A few showers possible Auckland southwards this morning. Cloud builds about the Waikato with a shower or two more likely there this afternoon possibly heavy.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny areas and increasing cloud, chance of a shower or two from this afternoon. Taranaki and Kapiti sees rain from late morning possibly heavy this afternoon with thunderstorms. Increasing northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud developing later today, light winds for most with northwesterlies picking up this evening. Northwesterly winds increasing from afternoon about the Wairarapa however.
Highs: 21-23

Wellington

Becoming mostly cloudy this morning, chance of a shower towards midday then showers becoming more frequent this afternoon. Gusty to strong northwesterly winds, especially midday onwards.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny areas and increasing cloud, spells of rain about Northwest Nelson and the Sounds from midday then from evening elsewhere. Winds gusty from the northwest strong at times this afternoon onwards.
High: 18-21

Canterbury

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, increasing this afternoon. Brisk northerly quarter winds, more NNE near the coast and more NNW further inland. Winds will be strong at times this afternoon inland with possible gales about exposed areas.
High: 19

West Coast

Cloudy with rain, fairly patchy at first about North Westland then becoming a little more steady by midday. Rain will be heavy from afternoon for South Westland with possible thunderstorms then in the evening further north. Gusty northerly winds.
Highs: 17-18

Southland & Otago

High cloud with breezy northeasterly winds, some rain about Southland by mid afternoon and late afternoon for coastal Otago as winds change westerly then mostly clearing in the evening. About and west of Queenstown expect rain from morning with heavy falls in the afternoon west of Glenorchy then easing evening.
