A northerly quarter airflow increases over the country today, winds becoming quite strong over the South Island this evening and overnight. Rain for the West Coast becomes heavy this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny areas and some cloud for Northland and Auckland, cloud thickens this evening. Mostly cloudy elsewhere with a few patchy showers possible at times. Light winds tending north to northeasterly.
Highs: 22-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Periods of cloud with north to northwesterly winds, a few showers possible
at times mainly for Taranaki in the morning then elsewhere this afternoon.
Highs: 20-24

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud. Northeasterly winds, northwesterlies
push into the Wairarapa this afternoon then further north later this evening /
overnight.
Highs: 23-25

Wellington

Sunny areas and some cloud, northerlies build from this afternoon.
High: 20

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with northwesterly winds strengthening from midday, some high
cloud increases during the day. Nelson is a bit cloudier with skies mostly
cloudy by afternoon, a few late light showers. Winds strong overnight with gales
possible for Marlborough.
Highs: 20-23

Canterbury

Any morning cloud breaks to mostly sunny weather, expect high cloud to then
increase however. Northeasterlies this morning tend northwest this afternoon. In
the evening and overnight northwesterly winds will be strong at times especially
inland where gales are possible.
High: 24-25

West Coast

Cloudy with northeasterlies increasing during the day, patchy showers turn
to rain about South Westland this afternoon then becoming heavy. Winds from
afternoon becoming quite strong about Fiordland and South Westland with gales
likely near the coast, strong winds move in North Wesland by evening.
Thunderstorms possible about South Westland later this evening then further
north overnight.
High: 19

Southland & Otago

High cloud with north to northeasterly winds increasing during the day, a
few spits of rain late afternoon / evening. Winds tend strong northwest
overnight for most, from evening Southland will see particularly strong winds
from the northwest with gales likely at times.
Highs: 18-20
