Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
TROUGH BRINGS HEAVY SHOWERS IN THE FAR NORTH
A kink a southwest airflow or trough in other words brings a few heavy showers Auckland northwards later this morning into the afternoon, this combined with cold upper air means there are hints of instability so you never know a rumble of thunder or two may occur.
Check out today’s thunderstorm chances from Metservice here.
TOUCH OF FROST IN THE SOUTH
Skies about the interior of the lower South Island should have been fairly clear last night so it will be a cold start this morning.
Central Otago through to the Mackenzie Country is the most likely spot for a frost, not overly cold but a smattering of -1 to -2’s should be likely first up.
The next few mornings ahead the rest risk expands. More here.
COLD FRONT ON WEDNESDAY
A cold front moves over the South Island on Wednesday morning then the North Island from afternoon, expect rain or showers for most regions.
There will be cold air moving through naturally so snow about the ranges is likely, snow may fall to 200m in the far south, 300 to 400m for the upper South Island and 600 to 700m for the Central North Island later in the day.
It’s not an overly long lasting front, by Thursday morning we will have a very frosty start for the South Island with showers still remaining further north. Friday and Saturday the weather is not to bad in the east, a few showers are likely in the west.
