Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
HIGH RAINFALL EASTERN NORTH ISLAND
The airflow consistently comes in from the northeast this week, eastern regions and the eastern North Island specifically is going to pick up a fair amount of rain.
Most of this rain will fall today, then around the 23rd / 24th and 25th June.
The “Precipitation percentage of normal” map below runs from today through to Monday 26th June. Blue colouring means that part of the country is expecting more rainfall than would normally be expected at this time of year, red means less rainfall is expected and white is an average amount of rainfall. The more intense either red or blue then either scenario is more true.
CONVERSELY – GREAT WEATHER IN THE SOUTH
Due to a predominant northeasterly airflow the far south of the South Island can look forward to some good weather till Thursday afternoon, at that point a front moves in bringing thickening cloud and a few late showers, cloud and a few light showers linger on Friday with southeasterlies then conditions clear up on Saturday.
Temperatures will not be overly warm, sitting between 10 and 12 degrees all week. For warmer afternoon highs somewhere like Kaitaia in Northland is going to see temperatures around 16 to 17 degrees.
WINDY NORTH ISLAND ON WED / THU
A low moves close to the North Island this Wednesday from the Tasman Sea, moving out from this low is a front with strong northeasterly winds ahead of it. As the front pushes down over the North Island, so to will strong northeasterly winds move southwards. The airflow actually tends more to the east on Thursday then perhaps even to the southeast on Friday.
You can see in the maps below these winds.
On Friday and Saturday winds may still continue to be fresh or blustery along the east coast (Gisborne to Wairarapa).
