Monday’s Headlines: Another low moves in, Good weather further south, Front flicks north on Wed

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

ANOTHER LOW MOVES IN

Yes another low is moving towards the North Island today from the Tasman Sea, the centre of the lower crosses the upper North Island overnight.

There is some unsettled weather due with this low but it will likely not be as problematic as the low that moved into the North Island on Saturday.

Most regions can expect rain or showers but the east coast (Gisborne to Wairarapa) will stay dry then overnight spits move in north of Napier. On Tuesday there is a chance of heavy falls north of about Mahia Peninsula in the east.

There may be a few isolated heavy falls for the upper North Island today, perhaps with thunder also. Later this evening or overnight could see a touch of heavy rain for Bay Of Plenty.

While northerlies may be a little blustery they shouldn’t cause issues in general, however … if cumulonimbus / thunderstorm clouds form there is the chance of strong wind phenomena associated with these clouds.

GOOD WEATHER FURTHER SOUTH

While the North Island has an incoming low to deal with, the South Island especially in the east has some settled weather. It is a bit cold this morning but it should lead to a nice day.

The West Coast does have a little cloud and the far south thanks to a few fronts bushing Southland.

FRONT FLICKS NORTH ON WEDNESDAY

Well this actually starts out as a warm front about the far south overnight Tuesday, it then pushes up the east coast of the South Island on Wednesday bringing cloud and a few patchy showers. So Wednesday for the eastern South Island cools down.

Thursday is quite settled for most of New Zealand thanks to high pressure then northerlies strengthen over the South Island on Friday, this leads to a temperature jump in the east with high’s reaching into the late teens for Canterbury.

The West Coast and upper North Island are fairly consistent with their temperatures this week, the West Coast will likely stay in the mid teens. The upper North Island in the late teens. The eastern South Island has more of a contrast between cooler and warmer day time highs which makes things a little more interesting, cold on the cold days though there is no escaping that, but quite pleasant on the warmer ones.
